7. SorDuang
One of the Thai fiddles producing high tones. Its name comes from the small cartridge.
General Features: This instrument looks like an animal trap, called "Duang". The elements of
the fiddle are:
The small cartridge in a cylinder shape, it produces the bass and resonant sound. Its shape is like
a bamboo. This instrument is made of hardwood or the tusk of an elephant. Different kinds of wood produce
different tones and sounds. The front of the cylinder is covered with thin materials generally the skin of a
python or a boa constrictor or sometimes it can be a cow hide or a goat hide
The bow of the fiddle is usually made of wood or of the tusk of an elephant, It has the round and
long shape of a cylinder. It can be divided into 2 parts, the upper and the lower one. The shape is like a long
tail boat, called "Khon" and the lower part is called "Tuan lang". There are knob on the fiddle. Twisting the
high knob is for the low tones, and the low knob is for the high tones. "Rad-Oak" is the loop used for
hanging the fiddle's string. "Yong" is a small piece of wood used for twisting the string and its function is to
be placed under the vibrating part of the string to the cylinder cartridge.
The bow of the fiddle is usually made of hardwood or the tusk of an elephant, it has a curved
shape. At the end of the bow of the fiddle there is a hole to insert the horse tail and string it to the other part.
Role of the Sor Duang
1. To soften the sound or music of shadow puppet show.
