Importance of the instruments for the show are as follow:












                    1.  Thup  (A long  drum)  is  the  musical  instrument that keeps  the rhythm and tempo of the
         music. This is the most important instrument. The other musicians must listen to this main instrument. There
         are 12 songs for this  instrument that are "Dern", "Toi Jang kaoklong", "Dern)ak", "Sarm-Moo", "Nardklai
         Ookjakwang", "Nang Dern par", "song Narm". "Jaomuang Ook sang karn  , "Chumpol", "Yok pol", "Yak".
         "Klabwang". Only the professional  musicians can play all  12  songs. There  are  2 drums.  One has  a lighter
         sound called "Nuy chub" and the other one has a bass sound called "Nay Theang". The main drum is "Nuy
         chub" and the drum accompanying it is "Nuay Theang". In the past, there were 2 drum players (60 years ago
         only one  player started  playing  it).  The drum  is  held  on  the  laps.  This  nstrument is  generally  made of
         jackfruit wood, because it's very eas) to make. Cut a piece 60 centimeters long and make it like a tom bone.

                    Role of the "Thup"
                    1.  It determines the rhythm of the shadow show music and also initiates and pursues the tempo
                    2.  Keeps  the  rhythm  of the  performance softer for  the  angry.  love.  sorrowful  and  quarreling
         scenes.
                    3.  It initiates the rhythm for moving the figures
                    4.  Its music comes as an exciting melody that is fun to listen t::>
















                    2. "Mong". or gong. This  musical  instrument leads the tempC'  for the narrator during the pla)
        There are 2 pieces of gong which are hung by a nylon rope in  a wooden rail. 2 inches from each other, called
        "the rail of the gong" or "'Rang mong". The gong is made of iron. the first gong is ''Nuay jee" and the other is
        "Nuay tu um". In the past. it was made of steel (0.4 centimeter thick). It is  I 0  inches long and 4 inches wide.
        The  shape of the  Mong  look  is  like  a  percussion  instrument  with  small  gongs  of different pitches  strung
        together in  a semicircle. (a bass gong) The gong  will  produce  different sounds.  Before  bu) ing  it one  must
        check the sound as  it  must go along the voice of the musician.  It is  made of wood.  The top of the stick  is
        covered  with  a  piece of cloth  or rubber.  this  makes  the  gong produce  a  sweet  sound  and  protects  it  from
        breaking.
