When the Thub player beats along the action of the puppet, he must also be careful at all time.
For example when the comedian is being manipulated the Thub player must see and watch the shadow
puppet at all time.
The example of beats for the Thub when manipulating the comedian puppet is as follow

Sometimes. the comedian shadow puppet walks or hunches its shoulders the ··Pa" sound will
have to emphasis this movement. or sometimes the puppet \viii fight the enem) then the puppeteer will tell a
story, manipulate a puppet and blow the flute at the same time. Thub players will have to beat the sound of
"Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Tung-Pa-respectively.
For manipulating the hero or leading lady puppet. the sound of Thub will produce different
sound as the sample below:

Then, for the sorrowful scenes, the puppeteer will recite the poem named "Lord Mong" or a general verse
describing a miserable feeling at that moment, potra] ing a stressful emotion to the audience. The sounds are
as below;

Beating the Thub is very important while manipulating the shadow puppets. This instrument
will enhance and emphasize the puppet's emotions. The musicians must be alert and watch the puppeteers all
the time while the 5tory is performed. Also. he must de emphazise the emotions at times. This instrument
shows the way of life, and the physical features of the land in the south. and how bad and uncertain the
weather is. You can feel it by watchng the manner in which of the musician beats the drum.

Basic rhythm of beating the Thub in the shadow puppet show, there are 3 rhythms:
First (Thub) PA-PA (then, drum beat) receive the thub Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung 3 times
Second (Thub) PA-PA (then. drum beating) recive the thub Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung 3 times
Third (Thub) Tueng-Tueng-Tueng-Pa Tucng (then. drum beating (Tung-tung) (Tung-Tung-Tung)

Phee
The flute is an important musical instrument while manipulating the shadO\\ puppets. The
features of the flute are: it is a wind instrument with a reed in the pipe. it is made of wood. There are 6 kinds
of musical instruments that are Mong (a bass gong). Ching, Thub, Klang, Sor Ou and Phee. The mentioned
instruments are the main ones. Each instrument indicates which song and the rh] thm of this song. There are
3 kinds of flute in the south of Thailand, ··Pecton'', "Pee klang'' and ''Pee Yord". (The right word is cylinder
as the teacher looks hke a Flute from the central region) But they are called "Pee '\lai", "Pee klang" and "Pee
nork" respective!].
