Concept
Knowmg the techniques of playing the instruments and the tempo of the music is the first step
in applying skills for playing various instruments, playing them correctly, and also to understand the
technique for using them well in being shadow puppeteers

Objective

For the learners to recognize and keep the tempo or rhythm as well as the technique in using
each musical instruments of the shadow puppet show

Practicing Playing the Different Musical Instruments
The skills for learning each musical instrument are quite different one from another. The
movement is also different when playing along with the song. We can explain it as follow:
Gong of the shadow puppet show, the feature of beating along the tempo of the music, at the
~ beginning of the play.

At the beginning of the play, the Thub player will be the leader starting the music. Then, the
gong player will play after the Thub. We can explain the following details:
Pa-Pa-Pa-Mong-Pa-Mong-Teung-Tung-Pa-Mong-Pa-Mong-Teung-Tung
Repeat this tempo 6-7 times, when finished, the drum will be beaten at the same time as the
gong (follow the rhythm of the flute)
Mong-Teung-Tung-Tung-Mong-Teung-Tung-Mong-Teung-tung-tung-Mong-Teung-tung
Then, when the song is nearly finished, every one must finish at the same time
How to manipulate the hermit puppet
All musical instruments will play at the same time with Mong (using a low tone)
Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Tung-Teung-Teung-Mong
-Pa-Mong-Pa-Mong-Teung-Teung-Pa-Tung
Continue like this until finished manipulating the hermit puppet.
The Beat at Different Levels of the Chapter
We must beat the female gong which produces the high tone sound and has sweeter sounds than
the male gong which produces low tone sounds
For example: The beat at the beginning of the poem plays while the hero is visiting the forest,
then when he meets the leading lady:
Mong-Mong-Mong-Mong-Tung-Mong-Mong-Tung
Then recite the verse (the instrument will accompany the rhytm)
Mong-Tung-Mong-Tung-Mong-Mong-Mong-Tung-Mong-Mong-Mong-Tung-Mong-Tung-Mong-Tung
Reciting the verse: a rhyme or a verse with 8 syllables to a line. The 4 syllables to a line will be
used with the comedians "Teng" or "NooNui"
