How to make Bai Sri
Meaning
The word 'Bai Sri' is said to have originated from the Brahman religion which came
from an area of Cambodia. In Cambodian the word 'bai' means 'cooked rice', and in the Thai
northeastern dialect it means 'to touch'. The word 'sri' comes from the Sanskrit language and has
the same meaning in Bali language which is 'role model'. The word 'bai sri' refers to something
that is worthy of great beauty.
In the modem Thai thesaurus the word 'bai sri' is given the meaning 'rice which is graced',
'cherished rice', or 'A tray that is arranged and decorated beautifully with pandan leaves and flowers
and is used to hold sweets and snacks for ceremonial offerings and for compensation ceremonies.
The Soo Kwan ceremony which is sometimes called 'Bai Sri' or 'Bai Sri Kwan' is an
important ceremony for the Thais. This ceremony is performed on a variety of occasions, both happy
and sad ones. The Soo Kwan ceremony is used to show respect, congratulate, or to show gratefulness
for friends and family. It is also used to welcome visiting elders or teachers.
