The Meaning of Wisdom
The Bandit Dictionary in the year 2525 offers the following meanings:
Local culture: means the ability to use fundamental knowledge to develop creativity and
improve the life of local people.
Passing on knowledge or teaching: means to display knowledge and provide understanding
through telling stories as for example on how to distinguish good from evil.
Local Wisdom Even now nobody can really give a clear definition, but they can understand:
the general meaning, encompassing the early experiences and the knowledge that the local people have
inherited from their ancestors and in imparting them to the different institutions in the community, such
as family and religion, political, financial and social institutions. In addition, the Department of
Non-Formal Education links the word "Folk Wisdom" to the thought processes of experienced local
people. This acquisition of knowledge has been obtained through their career and their work experience,
and by way of different natural and traditional surroundings. These achievements are specifically related
to adopted traditional techniques. The Social Research Center has defined this ability to know how-to-do
things in two ways: the abstract theory putting the tools to methodic use into a concrete step by step
practical application. The culture and ways of life for various communities are shaped by their
relationship with its environment and the local needs. These include manpower in their natural
surroundings and their dependency on human and natural resources as well as the local wild life.
In such a way applying the Thai culture and its train of thoughts in their lives and by using the local
resources, more jobs and opportunities will be provided for the community. An example would be to use
a local expanse of land for the local community to farm on, or to make clay and wooden handicrafts
from local resources.
