Local Wisdom Even now nobody can really give a clear definition, but they can understand: the
general meaning, encompassing the early experiences and the knowledge that the local people have inherited
from their ancestors and in imparting them to the different institutions in the community, such as family and
religion, political, financial and social institutions. In addition, the Department of Non-Formal Education
links the word "Folk Wisdom" to the thought processes of experienced local people. This acquisition of
knowledge has been obtained through their career and their work experience, and by way of different natural
and traditional surroundings. These achievements are specifically related to adopted traditional techniques.
The Social Research Center has defined this ability to know how-to-do things in two ways: the abstract
theory putting the tools to methodic use into a concrete step by step practical application. The culture and
ways of life for various communities are shaped by their relationship with its environment and the local
needs. These include manpower in their natural surroundings and their dependency on human and natural
resources as well as the local wild life. In such a way applying the Thai culture and its train of thoughts in
their lives and by using the local resources, more jobs and opportunities will be provided for the community.
An example would be to use a local expanse of land for the local community to farm on, or to make clay and
wooden handicrafts from local resources.

The Different Kinds of Folk Wisdom
The folk wisdoms are classified into eight parts, as follow:
1. Wisdom regarding food: the ability to select, create, modify and favor the ancient ways
while making food products.
2. Wisdom regarding clothing: the ability to conserve and create local clothing and
accessories with ethnic identities.
3. Wisdom regarding housing and architecture: the ability to promote, preserve, restore,
and develop houses and buildings in order to assert how valuable the local architecture is.
4. Wisdom regarding religion and tradition: the ability to apply local beliefs and knowledge
for useful purposes. The local traditions benefit the community, an example would be during local religious
holidays and festivals pondering on the beauty of various aspects of the culture and how it affects the ways
of life.
5. Wisdom regarding language and literary work: The continued practice of the local
dialect in various communities helps to preserve the native charm and ascertains it will continue being used
by future generations. The local dialects can be best preserved through literature, being used in school, as
well as being promoted in everyday activities.
6. Wisdom regarding traditional Thai healers: The ability to boost and protect public health
in the community, by putting an emphasis on health care autonomy for example through the use of medicinal
herbs, traditional massages, etc.
