               waiting
waiting for a teaching round with one of the attendings, and A.Tada walked
                                                      the
past our team of 4 students and told us to page that attending because he
was late. That was the fi rst time, A Tada impressed me.
When I was an extern at Hat Yai Hospital, we would wait for his eve-
ning rounds every Monday at 7 pm and it could last until 10 pm if we were
busy and had so many questions to ask him. He would help see any patients
we asked him, not just cardiology cases, all with his genuine enthusiasm.
When I was working at Songklanagarind Hospital as a resident after I
graduated from the medical school, we would start seeing patients together
at 7.00 am every morning. If he was an attending that month, we would see
him again in the evening for roundings on any new cases and ICU cases.
He was a Faculty Dean when I was doing cardiology unit rotation as a
second-year resident, we would start roundings even earlier than 7 am, and

then meet again at 4 pm after he fi nished with all meetings at the faculty.
I remembered, he was the only cardiology attending at that time, but yet he
was so reachable. I could call him any time even while he was in the meet-
ing if I had questions about patients. I did insert my fi rst temporary pace
maker while he was on the phone with the ICU nurse, teaching me what to

do. He had to be on the phone because he was in the meeting. I was on call
24 hours a day 7 days a week and so was he. He came to see the patient
every night after he fi nished his duty at his clinic in Hat Yai. He would give
a teaching round for residents every Tuesday night during my four years at
               Songklanagarind Hospital.

He and A. Somsong would set up so many dinner meetings

at his home for residents, so we would feel very close and

easy to talk to them for anything. These gatherings offered
me sanctuary of relaxation away from all the stress and

                                    demands of residency life
