1. The Importance of Local Traditions and of the Thai Traditions
Local knowledge and everyday life experiences were accumulated by previous generations
who then determined what was passed on. This collected information helps solve contemporary problems
that Thai people from different localities face. It has also helped them adapt to modem life.
2. The Origins of Thai Traditions
The process of Thai tradition starts from a person who is knowledgeable, diligent, and does
good deeds. Such a person gets bis cultural wisdom from 1) thinng creatively on his part, 2) inheriting
information from previous generations, 3) acquiring from the educated, 4) discovering from the natural
environment, 5) ascertaining from local art, culture, traditions, and traditional theatrical plays, 6) learning
i' from religion, and 7) gaining from a variety of media. These helped to develop, select, and adjust the
knowledge which is then applied to special proficiencies in: 1. knowledge, 2. skills, 3. technique, 4. learnig
I resources, and 5. networking. In that order specific expertise will follow the extent of the thirteen parts of
Thai tradition, which are:

2. Religions, Traditions and Ceremonies
3. Agriculture
4. Languages and Literature
5. Arts and Crafts
6. Musical Performing Arts
7. Bussiness and Community Welfare
8. Historical Archaeology
9. Local Sports and Games
10. Learnig Strategies
11. Youth Acitivities
12. Environment
13. Thai Traditional Medicine and Herbs
The Meaning of Wisdom
The Bandit Dictionary in the year 2525 offers the following meanings:
Local culture: means the ability to use fundamental knowledge to develop creativity and
improve the life of local people.
Passing on knowledge or teaching: means to display knowledge and provide understanding
through telling stories, as for example on how to distinguish good from evil.
