        Starting Point and Work Results
Mr. Jaruen Ubol has been interested in drawing since childhood
and while in primary and secondary school art was his favorite subject. He then started to practice in using

colors in drawings and painting because the colors are easy to find and are not expensive. His favorite types
of drawings were for billboards, advertisements for films by drawing illustrations of the actors, when there
were movies coming out in the local area he would ask for the poster to practice painting using poster paints.
When he had the opportunity to study in secondary school in Songkhla Province he saw big movie

advertisement posters frames that made him want to know how they were made. W h en he had free time
on Saturday and Sunday he liked to go to the theater to watch the artists draw the illustrations and by
observing he learned the methods in magnifying pictures and the use of oil paints in big pictures, he felt that
it was not difficult and he dreamt about being an artist. From his frequent visits to watch the artist they

became friends and the artist invited him to help, starting with drawing the lines, scanning, enlarging,
sketching, and practicing coloring the background and the extra scenery. When practicing with the colors he
learned that the oil paints were not easier or harder to use than any other type of colors. Later he started
drawing the main characters. He then became an artist in the theater in Songkhla for 2 years, later moving to

other areas for 2-3 years. After his travels he went to study in the Department of Arts and Crafts in the Thai
Fine Arts School in Bangkok finishing a vocational level and took the test to become a government teacher,
while waiting for the results of his test he was accepted in the Engineering College to study for his high

vocational certificate (currently the Rajamangala Technology Rattanakosin University Engineering Campus)
but not even finishing one term he was called to replace a teacher in a primary school and was a teacher for
11 years until he quit government work to pursue his personal business. Since the development of computers
the art of drawing pictures has less value because people use the technology of print on vinyl. There might be
no one interested and the art might be lost, it is such a pity just thinking about it. Drawings give more

emotion than digital pictures because it is done with skill. When he was given the opportunity to be a part of
the Thai cultural program he was then chosen as a Cultural Instructor in the art of drawing portraits and was
supported by the community in Wat Son Sub-district.
