study, only 60% of domiciles in Phuket were indigenous
Phuket residents, compared to Phang-nga in which 90%
of domiciles belong to indigenous Phang-nga residents.
3. Urbanization and traffic congestion
The high and increasing level of urbanization
in Phuket contributes to increased population density,
both Thai and non-Thai. This aggravates problems such
as traffic jams, which reduce the level of happiness and
mental health among residents, while ir.icreasing the level
of stress.
Boan Nam Khem: Voluntarism after the
2004 Tsunami
Following the disastrous Tsunami in December
2004, the villagers of one heavily impacted village (Baan
Nam Khem) developed a remarkable sense of voluntarism
which had not been witnessed before. The village is
unusual in that it is comprised of in-migrants from a variety
of disparate locations who came to the area to make a
livelihood. Thus, there was no history of relatedness and
solidarity as in most Thai villages. However, after the
Tsunami, the villagers came together for the community
good through self-less voluntarism since they realized
their survival and welfare depended on mutual support.
In addition to helping each other, the Baan Nam Khem
residents also reached out to help victims of other natural
disasters, as far away as Nakhon Ratchasima and Phra
Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provinces. The spirit of helping
others increased the general level of happiness of the
community and residents.
