Abstract
This research was intended to survey, collect and analyze the data on folk
wisdom of the lower southern Thailand : Pattani, which would ultimately be developed
into a culture database. The data was collected from documents available from
government and non- government agencies. Interviews of knowledgeable authorities and
villagers were carried out, coupled with observation and photography. The findings and
criticisms were then described.
Folk wisdom in Pattani could be classified into 7 categories : wisdom about food,
handicraft, folk medicine, performances, occupation, housing, and clothing. Three factors
that fostered such wisdom were identified. I) Natural Environment. The areas in the
Sankala Khiri Mountain Ranges were suitable for mixed gardening or agriculture. Because
bananas were abundant, they were turned into seasoned banana snacks for sale. Besides,
Pattani's extensive seashore favored cockle farming and seashore fishery. Several foodstuffs
such as Buda sauce and seaweed salad were produced from marine products. 2) creativity
and Available Resources. Materials ,abundant and available in the communities were made
into souvenirs and other paraphernalia for sale, such as flowers from Para rubber leaves
and woven bage from Liphao vines. 3) Folklore and Religious Belief. Villagers' belief
and folklore related to Brahmanism. Buddhism and Islam, coupled with their creativity
and availability of resources, led to and nourished the development of various form of folk
medicine such as curing diseases with medicinal herbs , massaging, psychic treatment with
black magic and astrology as well as the development of local performances such as Nora ,
Sila , and mayong.
