'For the -.Prince of• Songkla University, Professor Dr, Jiro
Sugi in his positions as the Director of NODAI Research Institute,
and the Director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science has
rendered his support to the Faculty of Natural Resources in terms of
scholarships,- short trainings, seminars arrangements and workshops as
well as providing experts to give academic advices to the staff in agro-
industry and fermentation industry, consistently throughout the past three
years. In I 982, the ass:stance has been expanded in the forms of scientific
instruments, scholarships, trainings, seminars, experts and research grants
in the field of soil science, with the emphasi5 on the development of peat
soil and saline soil influenced by salt from sea water, to achieve the
development and the expansion of agriculture production base in the
southern region. Besides, Professor Dr. Jiro Sugi has encouraged the
staJf of the Faculty of Natural Resources to participate in the
research projects which are concerned with marine science and naturai
mangrove resource science which are abundant in the south of
Thailand.

Because of Profrssor Dr, Jiro Sugi's achievements and
contributions towards the activities in agricultural science in Thailand
to a great extent as well as his direct support to the Prince of Songkla
University, the University Council has agreed that Professor Dr. Jiro Sugi
be conferred the Honorary Doctor Degree of Philosophy in Agricutural
Science of the Prince of SongkJa University by Your Royal Highness.
