Songkla University Council on July 2s 1981, the Council unanimously agreed to confer
the honorary degree of Doctor of Science upon Associate Professor Jack Richard Cannon
in recognition of his established position as an authority in the field of chemistry and for
his contribution in the development of scientific knowledge in the Prince of Songkla Univer-

71"1Jel.J'Yll'il.~1~m:::rh Professor J .R. Cannon was born in 1927 in sydney, Australia. He graduated
from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours after which

[)l'f'lrl'fi.J"ll'f'll'il.f11'il.'Yl1 bbfi he received a Master's Degree at the same University. He was awarded a Doctor of Phi-
losophy degree in Cambridge, England. Since 1949 he has continuously held lectures and

' of Technology, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and at

the University of Western Australia. During this time he has had fifty research articles
published in international journals.
Apart from his work as a research scientist, he has proved to be a devoted
7'fib'Lifi~1 1el.Jfll'fim7 teacher and has constantly taken an interest in the careers of his ex-students especially
am?ng those from developing countries.

In 1974 he first visited Thailand to meet his ex-students working i11 various Thai
universities and spent the majority of his time at Prince of Songkla University. He ·gave
invaluable advice for the planning of future development of the Chemistry Department,
such as planning for the research activity areas, teaching program as well as the servicing

facilities e.g. the provision of Journals, equipment and glass blowing. At his instigation, a
glass blower from the University of Western Australia came to Prince of Songkla Univer-
sity. to demonstrate and provide training for the local staff at no cost to the University.
